“As long as there are poor, they will be poorly housed” – William Morris

This quote from artist and socialist William Morris’ ‘Justice’ speech in 1888 was a starting point for artist Jayne Murray‘s project, Bringing It Home – an exploration of housing, protest and design for social change. Morris is one in a long line of many artists who have connected their practice with social concerns, and used their voice to disrupt the existing patterns and status quo, to challenge the received wisdom and to posit alternatives.

In this Ethical Matters talk, Jayne will talk about her own artistic practice and that of others, exploring the significant events, previous successes and untested ideas that hold value in our current housing predicament. After the talk, you will have the opportunity to visit Jayne’s new installation Someone Else’s Dream, which explores the metrics and aspirations of housing, and features her single-edition blueprint book, Dualities – printed using the cyanotyope process employed by architects and planners prior to digitisation – displayed publicly for the first time.

Jayne Murray is an artist based in Birmingham. Her work engages with social structures experienced by communities with whom she collaborates. She makes visual and experiential work rooted in research to make effect positive change.

This event is in the Brockway Room, which is located on the ground floor. The talk will also be livestreamed.

All the ground-floor rooms are fully accessible by wheelchair. There is also an accessible toilet on the ground floor opposite the Brockway Room.
