 Central London Humanists: The Universe and The Divine with Dr Alfredo Carpineti

In-person speaker events are back! The organising committee of Central London Humanists is thrilled to welcome you all back to our new season of in-person speaker events to be held every third Wednesday of the month starting September 2021.

Our first speaker will be Dr Alfredo Carpineti, who alongside his husband Chris Carpineti will talk to us about the relationship between the Universe and the Divine.

From alleged messages in the cosmic microwave background to the fine-tuning of the Universe, scientists, philosophers, and popes have had to grapple with what astronomy does and doesn’t tell us about humanity and religion.

Dr Alfredo Carpineti (he/him) is a gay Italian astrophysicist, science journalist, and social activist. He is the chair and founder of Pride in STEM, an award-nominated British charitable trust, and he was recognised as one of the 100 LGBTQ trailblazers by Attitude Magazine. He’s the senior space correspondent for IFLScience and he blogs, vlogs, and podcasts as The Astroholic.

Chris Carpineti is a video editor who loves to make videos and podcasts, both in the STEM field for IFLScience and Pride in STEM, and also in his free time for his personal projects. He’s one half of Astronomy podcast The Astroholic Explains, and the creator of Raidercast: the leading podcast for the Tomb Raider video game series.

Join Dr Alfredo and Chris Carpineti as they discuss the surprising, the head-scratching, and sometimes the plainly absurd claims connecting the Universe with the Divine. The talk will be recorded and will be featured as a live recorded episode of The Astroholic Explains.

===================

Doors open at 6.30 pm for the talk at 7.00 p.m

Please arrive before the talk to enjoy a glass of wine from our charity wine bar and mingle.

All profits from the wine bar will go to the speaker’s chosen charity. For September, bar profits will be donated to Pride in STEM, a UK-based charitable trust supporting LGBT+ scientists internationally.

Our speaker events are free, but we kindly ask for a £3 contribution per head, collected upon entry to the event. This helps towards the hire of the venue and equipment.

Events are advertised on multiple online portals and through email, so RSVP numbers on any one portal may not be fully indicative of the greater attendance on the day.

We encourage dialogue, debate, and sharing of information, but ask people to keep their comments cordial. Any individual’s views expressed here do not necessarily reflect the views of the group at large.
