Children’s Workshop with Catriona McDermid (bassoon)

Catriona has recently graduated with distinction from her Masters degree at Royal College of Music, where she studied with Joost Bosdijk, Julie Price, Andrea de Flamineis and Wouter Werschuren. Beginning her musical education at home in North Yorkshire, she progressed through the National Children’s and Youth Orchestras of Great Britain and then continued her studies reading Music at Lincoln College, Oxford, graduating in 2014 with first-class honours. As a keen orchestral musician, she is a triallist for principal bassoon with BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, has recently performed with Ulster Orchestra, Sinfonia Cymru and Britten-Pears Orchestra, and is this year the bassoonist for London Philharmonic Orchestra’s ‘Future Firsts’ Scheme. As a soloist Catriona has given concerto performances with Zeitgeist Chamber Orchestra, York Young Soloists, and the Oxford University String Ensemble and is currently a recital artist for the Countess of Munster Musical Trust. Catriona also performs regularly as a baroque bassoonist, recently performing with Florilegium and Eboracum Baroque and she is also this year a student of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Experience scheme and a Handel House Talent Scheme Artist. Outreach work is another of Catriona’s passions and her work as a chamber musician ties in closely with her outreach work; as a member of Magnard Ensemble she gives regular outreach sessions and family concerts, including their current ‘Revolting Rhymes and Marvellous Music’ tour.
