Sunday Concerts: Elmore quartet

Winners of the Tunnell Trust Awards 2020, the Elmore String Quartet is a dynamic young ensemble formed at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2017. In their Conway Hall début, they offer Fanny Mendelssohn’s quartet, performed only once during her lifetime, and which apparently did not receive approval from her brother.

Strongly influenced by Beethoven and inhabiting a passionate, rhapsodic sound world, the quartet, one of the earliest written by a woman, sits confidently alongside the music of her much better explored colleagues, Haydn and Brahms.

Xander Croft (violin)
Pijus Jonušas (violin)
Inis Oírr Asano (viola)
Felix Hughes (cello)

Programme:

Haydn | Quartet in C ‘Sun’ Op.20/2
Fanny Mendelssohn | Quartet in E♭
Brahms | Quartet No.2 in A minor Op.51/2
