Explaining Atheism: What Does the First Atheist Age Mean for the UK?

*Please note that everyone wishing to join this event must register for a ticket in advance. Tickets will not be available to purchase on the door.*

For the first time in our history atheists outnumber theists in Britain. Are we entering the first ‘atheist age’? What might this mean for our political and civic lives?

Join us for a panel discussion exploring what it means to live in an atheist society.

Hosted by researchers from the Explaining Atheism programme, Dr Lois Lee (University of Kent) and Dr Aiyana Willard (Brunel University). Panelists include Daisy Scalchi, BBC Head of Religion and Ethics, Chine McDonald, Director of Theos, the religion and society think tank and author of God is Not a White Man, and Dr Will Gervais evolutionary and cultural psychologist and author of the forthcoming Disbelief: The Origins of Atheism in a Religious Species.

As part of this event we are hosting a private view of a new exhibition Beyond Religion in the Brockway Room at Conway Hall from 4:30pm. All are welcome to come and see this inspiring display of photographs and films from artists Aubrey Wade and Briony Campbell before the talk begins.

Explaining Atheism is a three year programme (2022-2024) led by Queen’s University Belfast in collaboration with the University of Kent, Brunel University London, Coventry University, St Mary’s University Twickenham London and the University of Notre Dame Australia.
