 One Nation, Under Trump?

The recent events in the USA have left many people around the world aghast, including a large proportion of American residents. No one yet knows, including likely Donald Trump himself, how things will develop over the next four years. Questions of his administration’s values and priorities – protectionism, militarism, monied elitism, social conservatism, white nationalism – are rapidly converging with questions about his methods. Norms and precedents are overturned on a daily basis, leaving his critics horrified and his defenders cheering at his “unorthodox” actions. The only certainty is that we must face the immediate future with greater uncertainty than at any time since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Professor Sarah Churchwell, America-born and educated, is in an excellent position to offer some thoughts on these matter, reflecting on some of the issues arising from such unprecedented and disturbing times.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to get insights as we witness this new era in world workings, and to ask some leading questions.

Sarah Churchwell is the Professor of American Literature and Public Understanding of the Humanities at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, and director of the Being Human Festival at the University of London, UK. She is known for her expertise in twentieth- and twenty-first-century fiction. She regularly appears on British television (including BBC Newsnight and Question Time) and radio and has also judged several literary prizes, including the Booker Prize, the Women’s (Orange) Prize for Fiction, and the David Cohen Prize for Literature.
