Preppers aim to survive a range of possible crises by reducing their dependency on perceived vulnerable systems. They have been subject to societal and media ridicule for holding dark visions of apocalyptic futures and for seeing crisis as immanent in the everyday. But then came 2020, bringing fire, locust plagues, a pandemic and social unrest. Have we been ‘awakened’ to the future as catastrophe, had our ‘eyes opened’ to our proximity to crisis, been offered a ‘glimpse’ of an apocalypse to come? And, as our survival is made to be an individual responsibility, achievable by making choices according to our ‘common sense’ or ‘instinct’, are we all preppers now?
