 Performance Workshop: Contemporary Soul Groove

Come an spend an evening with some of the best, brightest and most inspiring theatre, dance and movement practitioners in the country. Learn new skills, release hidden talents, improve your practice and create new work.

This workshop is open to everybody and is the first of a series of ten on Monday evenings at Conway Hall. We’ll guide you if you are a newcomer and stretch you if you are an experienced professional.

Wear clothing that you can easily move in.

This event will be led by dance and performance artist Tania Soubry.

The workshop will start with a soulful warm up, releasing and energising, tuning into our breath, our weight in relationship to gravity, and ourselves, our soma. Raising the pulse, circulation and stretching into flexibility. We’ll then do some simple steps and moves, circling and spiralling, opening and closing, gathering and sending, shifting weight, moving the chi, working on grounding, centring, total alignment and connections, simple fundamental basics, oiling the articulations, balance, off balance, strength, softness, subtleness and co-ordination.

You will move on to more complex movement patterns, working on articulation, effort, dynamics and rhythmicality in a fun and funky way. And we’ll finally do a bigger phrase, travelling through space, playing with movement material, including footwork, changing directions, to get us dancing in a grooving and elaborate way. The workshop will include some floor work as well as some upside down, own movement exploration, given material and own creation of movement material.

Tania Soubry is a dance and performance artist. Since 2003 she has created her own work: Wholly, currently touring as part of the Dance Roads Festival in Europe and Canada; it (instead of twenty-one-words), shown at Les Repérages, France; Back to the Roots with Jimy, performed at the Luxembourg Dance Festival, Nancy and Zagreb; Two People Coming Together, performed among others at the Place, London. She recently created soulsongdances. She participated in the choreographic research and composition programme Prototype II, Vocal presence in choreographic scores, Royaumont, France.
