Bloomsbury Festival: Stories of Song

As part of Bloomsbury Festival, we’re thrilled to welcome two exceptional singers, Miki Berenyi and David McAlmont, to reflect on their love of music, songwriting and experience of navigating their industry as artists, hosted by Holly Elson, our Head of Programmes.

In an evening filled with live performance and conversation about their songs, influences, passions and lives as singers, the panel will explore personal relations on perhaps our most immediate art form – our thoughts, emotions and identity made real through our breath – and ask: What does it mean to sing?

Miki Berenyi is a singer, songwriter and guitarist, best known as a member of the indie band Lush and currently a member of Piroshka. Described as “an extraordinary life story” by MOJO Magazine, her new autobiography, Fingers Crossed: How Music Saved Me from Success, tracks the trials and tribulations of being a female singer-songwriter rising to fame in the 90’s.

Famed for his incredible voice, David McAlmont rose to prominence in the 90’s, opening for Morrisey and collaborating with ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler and producer David Arnold. Melody Maker once commented: “One day he will open his mouth and a cathedral will fall out”. Today he works as an art practitioner within music and architecture.
