The Courage to be Myself – Overcoming Inferiority Feelings through Social Interest

Azhar Juri first arrived in the UK in 1991 to train as a teacher; he later retrained as a Registered Mental Health Nurse and is currently working as a Registered Manager of a Recovery Care home for working age adults with mental health challenges. He lives and works in Brighton and recently founded a new mental health charity (MeRAC) to improve mental health services in residential care. As chair of the Registered Managers Network (Mental Health) for Sussex, and in conjunction with the new charity, Azhar is spearheading a campaign to increase cooperation within mental health services, and to promote collaboration within the community, ultimately using charity and social interest to bring about more compassion in society.

Azhar will be talking about how social, religious and cultural constructs and expectations defined his upbringing, and how his place in the family birth order dictated his role as the first son of 6 boys, supporting his family members who one way or another were affected by the consequences of a broken marriage (common in polygamous marriages) in his birth country.

In recent years, PTSD took over his life and almost cut it short, but with courage and determination, Azhar found his way through to reshape his world.  His life experiences have given him new insight and new energy which he uses to help others to be the best that they can be. A champion of Bollywood dancing and raising LGBT awareness in adult social care, Azhar is passionate about improving all aspects of his own life; from discouragement and feelings of inferiority because he could not be culturally and religiously perfect, he has found his own significance by having the courage to be true to himself. He is happy to share his story and to pass on his enthusiasm by giving others encouragement to discover and find their own lifestyle goals.
