 The Fulham Opera Robert Presley Memorial Verdi Prize

Conway Hall is delighted to welcome Fulham Opera in for their bi-annual Verdi Prize, in memory of baritone Robert Presley.

The competition will be judged by Sir Thomas Allen (international baritone and patron of Fulham Opera, David Syrus (former Head of Music, Royal Opera House) and Pamela Kuhn (US soprano).

Sir Thomas Allen is an established star of the great opera houses of the world. At the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where in 2011 he celebrated the 40th anniversary of his debut with the company, he has sung over fifty roles. The same year he also celebrated the 30th anniversary of his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York.

He has been particularly acclaimed for his Billy Budd, Pelléas, Eugene Onegin, Ulisse and Beckmesser, as well as the great Mozart roles of Count Almaviva, Don Alfonso, Papageno, Guglielmo and, of course, Don Giovanni. His recent engagements have included the title role in ‘Gianni Schicchi’ for Los Angeles Opera and at the Spoleto Festival; the title role in ‘Sweeney Todd’, Beckmesser (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Faninal (Der Rosenkavalier), Prosdocimo (Il turco in Italia), Music Master (Ariadne auf Naxos), Peter (Hänsel und Gretel) and Don Alfonso at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Don Alfonso, Ulisse and Don Giovanni at the Bayerische Staatsoper; Faninal at the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia; Eisenstein at the Glyndebourne Festival; Don Alfonso at the Dallas Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and at the Salzburg Easter and Summer Festivals; Forester (The Cunning Little Vixen) at the San Francisco Opera and Beckmesser, Don Alfonso and Music Master at the Metropolitan Opera, New York.

Operatic Soprano, Pamela Kuhn has dedicated her life to the art of singing. She has thrived in bringing her sumptuous sound to the stages of Vienna, London, Venice, Paris and cities across America. After gaining her Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California, she based her career in London for twenty years, performing her recital debut with Graham Johnson at the Wigmore Hall and numerous performances with legendary pianist, Geoffrey Parsons. Since her return to America she is now recognised for her work as a voice teacher and mentor to her young professional singers. She maintains voice studios in New York City and Greenwich, CT and works with a wide variety of artists. She is the Director of Opus 8 Vocal Consultants offering voice and speech therapy and presentation skills. She is the Music Director and Conductor of both the Angel Choir and The MasterSingers Chorus and is the radio talk show host of “The Center Stage” on WGCH Greenwich.

David Syrus recently retired as Head of Music at the Royal Opera, where he worked for over 44 years, conducting many operas, including “Traviata” [with Sir Thomas] and “Falstaff”. Recent conducting includes the Chilean premières of “Billy Budd” and “The Rake’s Progress”. He has assisted on the complete Verdi canon at the Royal Opera, including playing “Otello” for Carlos Kleiber. He is Chairman of the Maggie Teyte Competition, and has worked with young artist programmes in Tokyo, Marseille, Colorado, Duesseldorf as well as with the Samling Programme in the UK. He has recorded continuo in Mozart and Rossini operas, lieder with Hildegard Behrens, and 18 th century arias with Annette Dasch. As a recital accompanist he has appeared at the Carnegie Hall and the Musikverein in Vienna.
