The Heidi Chronicles A play by Wendy Wasserstein “I was wondering what mothers teach their sons that they never bother to tell their daughters” The Heidi Chronicles debuted in 1988 and depicts the coming of age of Heidi Holland as she tries to find her place in the rapidly changing world around her. From painful high school dances to political rallies to power lunches and weddings of former lovers; Wasserstein’s episodic text spans the life of a generation from baby boomers to the ‘me’ decade of materialism to disillusionment. Heidi’s struggle with her place in the world as a woman and her problems with the political movements meant to represent her resonate strongly today. In this modern interpretation of the show as Heidi begs that their daughters never feel like she does like her friends do we must ask ourselves do we? How much further have we come? Do we still want the same things Heidi wants? And the most difficult question of all: what does Heidi want?
