The values of Positivism

In the nineteenth century positivism was founded by August Comte (1798-1857) as a challenge to what he saw as obscurantist ways of thinking. IT saw that the natural sciences could be use as a model for how we understand society: thus sociology was born. This talk from Fabian Tompsett will explore what positivism has to offer us in the digital age of the twenty first century.

Fabian Tompsett is a cybernetician who has studied the logical positivism of Otto Neurath (1882-1945). When Wikipedia came along, he was one of the early people to get involved. He has been researching positivism as a fore-runner of cybernetics. Fabian is currently Assistant Secretary of the Cybernetics Society.
