MAIN HALL

With a standard capacity of 400 spread over the balcony and ground floor seating, our Main Hall retains its period features and is internationally renowned for its excellent acoustics. The ground floor of the Main Hall is fully accessible by wheelchair.

The room is perfect for any functions requiring a large stage and floor area:

Filming • Livestream & Hybrid events • Conferences • Recording • Rehearsals • Meetings • Talks / Lectures • Comedy, Concerts & Performances • Dances • Weddings • Receptions • Fashion shows • Awards ceremonies • Launch events

The Main Hall was designed to host chamber music concerts and lectures and opened in 1929. The amazing acoustics were built into the space.

Some features include: an unusually high and hollow stage which acts like a resonating chamber, kicking the sound back out across the room; wooden panelling that creates a warm and rich acoustic; curved ceiling and corners which stop the sound bouncing around.

The quote above the stage, TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE, is from Hamlet and was also featured above the stage in South Place Chapel, the original home of the Ethical Society which is the charity that owns and runs Conway Hall.

Some interesting people who have graced the Main Hall stage:

  • George Orwell spoke at a demonstration for freedom of the press in 1945.
  • Humphrey Lyttleton recorded an entire live album, titled “Humph at the Conway” in 1954.
  • Yoko Ono participated in The Destruction, Art Symposium in 1966.
  • The Cure performed a gig in 1979.
