“profound music making” – The Strad
The Piatti Quartet on their programme:
“Just as the Dvořák’s ‘American’ includes folk tunes from an adopted home in the USA, so too does Moeran’s Second String Quartet, written after moving to Ireland in 1934. Drawing upon the rich and varied tapestry of Irish folk tunes he collected, Moeran weaves a captivating work from yearning, wistful airs to energetic and boisterous reels, all dressed up in a unique harmonic language albeit heavily influenced by Debussy, Brahms and even Mendelssohn. Why was this quartet never published and when was it written? Come along to Conway Hall to find out our theory!”
